In spite of the unattractive graphics, there is a host of activities, above all grammar ones, with (at times animated) explanations of language points and several quizzes, mostly devised using Flash.
At the beginning of the page there are some “self-diagnostic ” links which allow users to find the exercises best suited for their level.

Pearson Brown and his wife Caroline have been teaching English to adults for over 25 years, especially business English, and they manage their own school in Lyon, France.
From the first page it is possible to access a series of separate websites, all similar in graphics and in the use of Google ads. They all allow users to exercise their English, not only for business but also for medicine, for presentations, for human resources, as well as their grammar, listening skills and phrasal verbs….
In each website you can find a neat index for explanations and exercises, mostly matching ones, for which it is necessary to have a Flash reader. Each site is also linked to the other main ones but never to a “home-page”.
It is also possible to receive lessons by e-mail.
A good number of resources partly compensates the difficulty in navigation.

This web site is for people studying English as a Second Language (ESL) or English as a Foreign Language (EFL). There are quizzes, word games, word puzzles, proverbs, slang expressions, anagrams, a random-sentence generator and other computer assisted language learning activities. To make the pages download as fast as possible, images are only used when absolutely necessary and HTML formatting has been kept to a minimum. You do need Flash and Java to do most activities though.
Some of the grammar and vocabulary quizzes are shared with A4esl.
Among the most interesting sections are the podcast one, with programmes from VOA and activities to listen and learn songs, jokes and more, the Audio Concentration one, the Crazy Sentence Singer section, and the Computer Assisted Writing one, where, by answering some questions, you can have a variety of simple sentences written for you.

The Special English section of Voice of America is a tool to practice and improve American English. VOA Special English radio programmes are broadcast every day of the year on the VOA network. Each broadcast starts with world news, followed by a short feature report and a 15 minute feature.
Throughout this site you will find radio scripts from these feature programmes and the matching RealAudio and MP3 file of the text as it was delivered on the radio, enabling you to read along and listen to the audio report, thus learning new vocabulary and information about a variety of subjects, from issues in the news to American history.
Special English has a core vocabulary of 1500 words, it uses short, simple sentences that contain only one idea, active voice and do not use idioms. Special English broadcasters read at a slower pace, about two-thirds the speed of standard English.
Although this method is useful to learn new vocabulary and its American pronunciation, it may be less so for those who need to learn more complex or idiomatic language as well as to follow programmes and conversations at a normal pace.
An interesting section is the “Learning English” one (at the bottom of the menu on the left) where you can find short programmes on the history of certain words and expressions, others read at a normal pace) on linguistic topics (Wordmaster), quizzes and exercises on vocabulary and link to other useful resources for learning and practising English .

A website where to find free graded dictations. The whole passage (lasting from 10 to 30 seconds) is read at normal speed for you to listen for gist; then each phrase is read slowly twice, with punctuation; then the whole passage is read again for you to check your work; finally, the written text is shown. The only flaw is that there is no possibility of writing on-line: you need pen and paper!
