Qualcosa per tutti in questo mega-portale: spiegazioni di grammatica per chi sta imparando e suggerimenti per chi insegna, forum, chat, esercitazioni per inglese settoriale, quiz per i più piccoli, una newletter mensile, attività per migliorare le 4 abilità… Ci sono perfino suggerimenti su come fondare un English Club nella propria zona. Il tutto è inframezzato di annunci pubblicitari da google, pertinenti ma talvolta fuorvianti. C’è il rischio di perdersi o di trovare troppo. Nonostante tutto comunque la grafica è buona e l’organizzazione delle risorse molto curata, con aggiornamenti e possibilità di informazioni puntuali. Merita una visita, chissà che non vi affezionate.
Something for everyone in this mega-portal: grammar explanations for learners and tips for teachers, forums, chats, exercices for special interest English, quizzes for kids, a monthly newletter, activities to improve the 4 skills… There are even suggestions on how to found your own English Club. The whole thing is mixed with google ads, relevant but sometimes misleading. You run the risk of getting lost or of finding too much. However, graphics are good and the overall organisation is neat, with punctual information on updates. It deserves a visit and, who knows, you may grow fond of it!

Questa è l’introduzione ad un sito vastissimo, e non potrebbe essercene una più vera. Si possono qui infatti trovare antologie di versi, opere di narrativa e saggistica, parecchie enciclopedie e dizionari, il “world factbook”, collezioni di citazioni… abbastanza da spenderci qualche anno.
Tuttavia l’accessibilità non è molto curata, per esempio la suddetta introduzione è fornita come immagine senza testo alternativo, rendendone impossibile la lettura a non-vedenti e ipo-vedenti. Infinite possibilità, ma non per tutti. Peccato.

This is the intro to a huge website, and there couldn’t be a truer one. Sure enough you can find anthologies of verse, works of fiction and non-fiction, several encyclopaedias and dictionaries, the world factbook, collections of quotations…. Enough to spend several years on it.
Accessibility is not very well taken care of though, for example the introduction is actually an image with no alternative text, meaning that no visually impaired can read it. Endless possibilities but not for all. A pity, really.

Questo sito è per persone che studiano l’inglese come seconda lingua o come lingua straniera. Vi si trovano quiz, giochi, proverbi, anagrammi, un generatore di frasi nonché altre attività di apprendimento con l’uso del computer. Per permettere lo scaricamento il più veloce possibile delle pagine vengono usate immagini solo laddove sia davvero necessario; bisogna tuttavia avere Flash e Java per poter visualizzare buona parte delle attività.
Alcuni degli esercizi di lessico e grammatica sono condivisi con A4esl.
Tra le sezioni più interessanti vi sono quella di podcast, con programmi da VOA e attività per ascoltare ed imparare barzellette, canzoni ed altro, quella di Audio Concentration, quella intitolata Crazy Sentence Singer , e infine quella di Scrittura Assistita , dove, semplicemente rispondendo ad alcune domande, si possono generare una varietà di semplici frasi in prima o terza persona.

Il sito, nonostante un certo affollamento grafico, offre quello che promette nel suo nome, e cioè la possibilità di testare il proprio inglese in più ambiti e a più livelli.
Ci sono test per verificare lessico, conoscenze grammaticali, inglese commerciale, espressioni idiomatiche e via dicendo, tutti con correzione automatica e con possibilità di accedere sia a spiegazioni su quanto richiesto che a copie stampabili degli esercizi.
Inoltre è possibile esercitarsi ed auto-valutarsi per i più importanti esami di accesso a istituzioni accademiche e non negli USA (TOEFL, TOEIC, GMAT ecc.) . Articoli, lezioni, letture, blog, forum e quant’altro finiscono di corredare il sito, che si fa facilmente perdonare la tanta pubblicità; tutto il materiale è infatti gratuito.

Un portale molto ricco mantenuto da un insegnante di inglese di San Diego, CA. Consente l’accesso ad una serie di risorse interne ed esterne, dalla grammatica ad attività di arricchimento del lessico, di lettura e di ascolto.
La sezione di grammatica è divisa tra spiegazioni ed esercizi in Flash interni al sito e una serie di link esterni suddivisi per argomento.
La sezione di vocabolario contiene una parte di lessico illustrato con la possibilità di ascoltare la pronuncia.
Le sezioni di ascolto e lettura sono solo a livello avanzato e sono in corso d’opera; contengono ancora poco materiale.
Ricca invece la sezione dei link esterni, con alcuni collegamenti utili anche per gli insegnanti.
A very rich portal, managed by an EFL teacher of San Diego, CA. It gives access to several internal and external resources, from grammar to activities for practising vocabulary, listening and reading.
The grammar section has some explanations as well as Flash quizzes, plus a dedicated series of external links divided by topic.
There is an interesting “illustrated vocabulary” section which gives you the possibility of seeing pictures and hearing the pronunciation of several words.
The reading and listening sections are for advanced users only and still contain little material.
The external links section is very rich, with useful suggestions for teachers too.

Una grafica a dir poco rudimentale per un sito denso di contenuti per l’auto-apprendimento, da un progetto dell’Internet TESL Journal (iteslj.org)
In particolare, nella sezione monolingue, si possono trovare esercizi di grammatica e di lessico (alcuni, corredati da una finestra di controllo, con compilazione cartacea o … mentale della soluzione, altri con esecuzione e controllo elettronici) nonché cruciverba – tutti suddivisi per livello. Vengono proposti anche alcuni podcast provenienti da fonti diverse, ascoltabili e scaricabili gratuitamente, alcuni dei quali corredati da una trascrizione e da alcuni esercizi, altri invece con un rimando alla pagina di provenienza, dove è possibile vedere documentazione scritta.
Nella parte bilingue ci sono invece liste di esercizi suddivisi per lingua dello studente, dall’arabo allo zulu. Utile anche se si vogliono esercitare lingue diverse dall’inglese…

In the bilingual section you can find exercises listed according to the student’s mother tongue, from Arabic to Zulu. Useful also if you want to learn the basics of languages other than English!

Il sito principale offre servizi di insegnamento ed esercitazione a pagamento. La sezione “English grammar” è invece gratuita e contiene buone spiegazioni grammaticali e test, compreso un “assessment test” per valutare il proprio livello, una guida alla punteggiatura e suggerimenti di scrittura .
Attaccati a questa sezione ci sono anche un blog e un forum a libero accesso.
Mentre i contenuti proposti sono interessanti, la grafica (per esempio il fatto che il contenuto vero e proprio sia visibile solo in una piccola finestra centrale) così come l’organizzazione logica (molti link portano alle stesse risorse) potrebbero essere migliorate.
Per gli stessi contenuti gratuiti si può visitare anche l’indirizzo www.edufind.com/english/grammar/index.cfm, che ha un layout più chiaro.
