Per gli amanti del bello e della lingua inglese, una stupenda sezione del sito della British Library dove “provare” a girare le pagine di antichi codici miniati, rari manoscritti e preziose edizioni a stampa con un semplice click. I testi (se in inglese) o le relative spiegazioni (se scritti in altre lingue) sono ascoltabili in perfetto accento britannico.
For those who love beauty and the English language, a splendid section of The British Library’s website where you can try “turning” the pages of old illuminated or rare manuscripts and precious editions simply by clicking on them. The texts (if in English) or information about them(if in other languages) are read in perfcet british English and can be easilty listened to.

Un sito graficamente davvero bruttino e un tantino confuso, ma molto ricco, sviluppato da un insegnante de L’Académie de Nancy-Metz come insieme di risorse per il collège, cioè la scuola media.
Le attività sono di ogni tipo, dalla grammatica alla comprensione, dalla produzione scritta all’approfonimento di “civilità”, e sono in minima parte fornite direttamente, per la maggior parte collegate a siti esterni. L’aggiornamento è puntuale e ogni mese è possibile trovare argomenti di cultura legati alle singole date. Una vera miniera.
A graphically rather poor and slightly confused website, but a very rich one too, developed by a teacher of L’Académie de Nancy-Metz as a set of resources to teach English at “collège” – that is lower secondary school.
Activities are of all kinds, from grammar to comprehension, from written production to “civilisation”;very few are provided directly, most link to external sites. Updating is punctual and every month it is possible to find culture topics related to each date. A real gold mine.

Questa sezione del sito di una scuola elementare inglese presenta un compendio di “civiltà britannica”. I moltissimi argomenti trattati spaziano dalla vita di tutti i giorni alla forma di governo, dal cibo alle tradizioni, dallo informazioni storiche o geografiche a quelle turistiche. Il tutto è scritto in un linguaggio semplice, pulito ma efficace, adatto sia ad illustrare ai lettori più giovani i fondamenti dell’essere British sia a soddisfare le curiosità di chi sta apprendendo l’inglese. C’è anche un glossario di alcuni termini che potrebbero risultare incomprensibili non solo agli stranieri ma anche … ai parlanti di inglese americano!
This section from the website of an English primary school contains an electronic handbook of “British civilisation”. The many topics treated here span from everyday life to government, from food to traditions, from geographical and historical information to tourism. The language is simple, clean but effective, suitable both to illustrate to the younger readers the foundations of being British as well as to fulfill the curiosity of English learners. Sito piuttosto ricco e ben organizzato. Il menu si apre con una lezione settimanale e continua con un “libro” di spiegazioni grammaticali, seguito da lezioni di vocabolario, da una serie di tutorial con approfondimenti ed esercizi specifici, dal link ad alcuni cruciverba basati sul lessico proposto e dal link ad un forum per studenti d’inglese. Per esercitare le proprie abilità d’ascolto e di lettura ci si collega a siti esterni. Particolare attenzione è posta ai verbi irregolari, che si possono trovare sia sotto forma di lista che di flashcard, con la possibilità di fare degli esercizi. Il sito si completa con una serie di dizionari anche multilingue.
La navigazione a briciole di pane permette di sapere sempre dove ci si trova. La sponsorizzazione è legata evidentemente ad annunci pubblicitari di google, che non sono però eccessivamente invadenti. L’unica cosa che manca sono i feed rss che permetterebbero di tenere sotto controllo gli aggiornamenti. Una registrazione è richiesta invece se si desidera avere una casella di posta con English Page, gratuita per le operazioni di base, a pagamento per quelle più avanzate.
A quite rich, well organised website. The menu opens with a weekly lesson and continues with a “book” of grammar explanations, followed by vocabulary lessons, by a series of more specific tutorials with exercises, by links to crossword puzzles based on the given vocabulary and finally by a link to a students’ forum. To exercise one’s listening and reading skills there are links to external sites. Particular attention is given to irregular verbs, which can be found as a list or as flashcards and can be extensively exercised. The website is completed with multilingual and monolingual dictionaries.
Breadcrumb navigation is very useful to always know where you are. Sponsoring quite obviously comes from google ads, which are nevertheless not too intruding. The only thing that is missing is rss feeds which might help in checking updates. Registration is required if you wish to have an English Page mailbox, free for basic operations and with a small fee for more advanced ones.

Bartleby – Online books

“Il più grande editore di letteratura, opere di consultazione e versi su Internet, che fornisce a studenti, ricercatori e agli intellettualmente curiosi accesso illimitato e gratuito a libri e informazioni on-line.”
Questa è l’introduzione ad un sito vastissimo, e non potrebbe essercene una più vera. Si possono qui infatti trovare antologie di versi, opere di narrativa e saggistica, parecchie enciclopedie e dizionari, il “world factbook”, collezioni di citazioni… abbastanza da spenderci qualche anno.
Tuttavia l’accessibilità non è molto curata, per esempio la suddetta introduzione è fornita come immagine senza testo alternativo, rendendone impossibile la lettura a non-vedenti e ipo-vedenti. Infinite possibilità, ma non per tutti. Peccato.

This is the intro to a huge website, and there couldn’t be a truer one. Sure enough you can find anthologies of verse, works of fiction and non-fiction, several encyclopaedias and dictionaries, the world factbook, collections of quotations…. Enough to spend several years on it.
Accessibility is not very well taken care of though, for example the introduction is actually an image with no alternative text, meaning that no visually impaired can read it. Endless possibilities but not for all. A pity, really.

Un sito italiano con lezioni di Inglese, podcast ed contenuti vari, frutto del lavoro del CLAM – Centro Linguistico d’Ateneo Messinese. Questo sito tematico per l’apprendimento della lingua Inglese unisce le funzioni del blog a quelle del podcasting. Regolarmente vengono pubblicate delle brevi lezioni i cui contenuti spaziano dalla grammatica, al lessico, alla lettura, alle curiosità e tanto altro ancora, con chiari riferimenti ad episodi di vita reale: vacanze, cibo e salute, tecnologia, sport, vita sociale, ecc. La pubblicazione delle lezioni è alternata a supporti audio in formato podcast, ascoltabili on-line o scaricabili in formato .mp3.
La qualità dei materiali, tutti originali, è a prime vista buona; l’impossibilità però di accedere, in questo sabato pomeriggio, alle risorse audio e ad altri materiali pubblicati sul sito del CLAM, forse per sovraffollamento, non permette di valutarne la bontà.
An Italian website with English lessons, podcasts and more, provided by CLAM – the Language Centre linked to the University of Messina. This site, dedicated to learning English, unites the functions of a weblog and those of podcasting. Short lessons ranging from grammar to vocabulary to reading to trivia are published regularly, with clear references to everyday life: holidays, food and health, technology, sport, social life etc. The written lessons alternate with podcasts, accessible on-line and downloadable as mp3s.
The quality of the original materials seems good; nevertheless, on this Saturday afternoon, the impossibility of accessing either the audio or the other resources published on the CLAM server, maybe because of overcrowding, doesn’t allow me to closely evaluate them.

Un interessante blog che vi aiuterà a migliorare lessico, pronuncia e abilità di ascolto. Ogni settimana vengono infatti caricati tre brevi podcast (di 2 o 3 minuti) parlati in un inglese molto chiaro. Potete scaricarli sul vostro computer, oppure abbonarvi ai feed usando iTunes o Yahoo, o semplicemente ascoltarli cliccando sul lettore Flash disponibile in fondo ad ogni episodio. Il testo di ciascun podcast è disponibile direttamente (ed apparirà anche sul vostro iPod), così come talvolta sono presenti note di lessico o grammatica ed esercizi con chiavi.
All’interno di ciascun articolo si possono trovare collegamenti per alcuni dei temi menzionati (generalmente grazie a wikipedia) , oppure a storie pubblicate su giornali o altri media.
Le opzioni di ricerca nell’archivio potrebbero essere migliorate, dato che c’è solo un collegamento a “Come trovare cose in questo sito“; c’è però la possibilità di cercare una parola direttamente sull’ on-line Cambridge Dictionary.
Grazie a FeedBurner è pra possibile accedere o abbonarsi al primo volume di Greatest Hits del 2006, che presenta i 21 episodi maggiormente scaricati.
An interesting blog with podcasts that will help you to improve your English vocabulary and pronunciation and your listening skills. There are three short (2 or 3 minutes) podcasts every week, in clearly spoken English. You can download them to your computer, or subscribe using a programme such as iTunes or Yahoo, or simply listen to them by clicking the Flash player on the web page beneath each episode. The full text of each podcast is on this site (and will also appear on your iPod screen), as well as, at times, related grammar or vocabulary notes and exercises with linked keys.
Within the articles or right at the end, you can find links for some of the topics mentioned (usually linking to wikipedia) or to related stories from newspapers or other media.
Search options from the main page could be improved (there is only a link to “How to find things in this website“), but there is the possibility of looking up a word directly on the on-line Cambridge Dictionary.

Quiznet propone 6 domande interattive di lessico ogni settimana.
Crosswords è un cruciverba basato ogni settimana su un tema diverso e per risolvere il quale può essere necessario leggere articoli di varia natura qui collegati.
Sotto Exam Skills troverete consigli da insegnanti, esaminatori e studenti sugli esami più importanti e su come passarli, ascoltando brevi trasmissioni radio, scaricandone le trascrizioni, e testando la vostra comprensione con quiz appositi.
Wordmaster è un altro quiz interattivo dove vi verrà chiesto di indovinare parole di cui viene data la definizione, giocando contro il tempo.
Whereontonext è un gioco interattivo che vi porterà a visitare 6 località nelle Isole britanniche; il vostro tour prevede che ascoltiate i brevi report e rispondiate alle domande per ciascuna località così da poter continuare verso quella seguente.
