Qualcosa per tutti in questo mega-portale: spiegazioni di grammatica per chi sta imparando e suggerimenti per chi insegna, forum, chat, esercitazioni per inglese settoriale, quiz per i più piccoli, una newletter mensile, attività per migliorare le 4 abilità… Ci sono perfino suggerimenti su come fondare un English Club nella propria zona. Il tutto è inframezzato di annunci pubblicitari da google, pertinenti ma talvolta fuorvianti. C’è il rischio di perdersi o di trovare troppo. Nonostante tutto comunque la grafica è buona e l’organizzazione delle risorse molto curata, con aggiornamenti e possibilità di informazioni puntuali. Merita una visita, chissà che non vi affezionate.
Something for everyone in this mega-portal: grammar explanations for learners and tips for teachers, forums, chats, exercices for special interest English, quizzes for kids, a monthly newletter, activities to improve the 4 skills… There are even suggestions on how to found your own English Club. The whole thing is mixed with google ads, relevant but sometimes misleading. You run the risk of getting lost or of finding too much. However, graphics are good and the overall organisation is neat, with punctual information on updates. It deserves a visit and, who knows, you may grow fond of it!

Per gli amanti del bello e della lingua inglese, una stupenda sezione del sito della British Library dove “provare” a girare le pagine di antichi codici miniati, rari manoscritti e preziose edizioni a stampa con un semplice click. I testi (se in inglese) o le relative spiegazioni (se scritti in altre lingue) sono ascoltabili in perfetto accento britannico.
For those who love beauty and the English language, a splendid section of The British Library’s website where you can try “turning” the pages of old illuminated or rare manuscripts and precious editions simply by clicking on them. The texts (if in English) or information about them(if in other languages) are read in perfcet british English and can be easilty listened to.

Un sito graficamente davvero bruttino e un tantino confuso, ma molto ricco, sviluppato da un insegnante de L’Académie de Nancy-Metz come insieme di risorse per il collège, cioè la scuola media.
Le attività sono di ogni tipo, dalla grammatica alla comprensione, dalla produzione scritta all’approfonimento di “civilità”, e sono in minima parte fornite direttamente, per la maggior parte collegate a siti esterni. L’aggiornamento è puntuale e ogni mese è possibile trovare argomenti di cultura legati alle singole date. Una vera miniera.
A graphically rather poor and slightly confused website, but a very rich one too, developed by a teacher of L’Académie de Nancy-Metz as a set of resources to teach English at “collège” – that is lower secondary school.
Activities are of all kinds, from grammar to comprehension, from written production to “civilisation”;very few are provided directly, most link to external sites. Updating is punctual and every month it is possible to find culture topics related to each date. A real gold mine.

Le Podcards non sono altro che cartoline sonore che si possono sia scaricare che ascoltare on-line. Contengono informazioni su particolari città o luoghi, oppure su personaggi storici, invenzioni, film o eventi che hanno reso quel luogo famoso. Ciascuna cartolina è corredata da un testo contenente du eesercizi (uno di lessico e uno di comprensione) e la trascrizione dell’audio. Il sito fornisce anche una lista di link e una lista di verbi irregolari che si possono anche ascoltare.
La qualità dell’audio non è sempre perfetta né lo è l’accento della lettrice donna (evidentemente non madrelingua) ma l’idea è buona ed è abbastanza semplice per poter essere sfruttata con profitto.
PodCards are audio postcards that you can download or listen to on-line. They contain information about a particular town or city from different countries around the world or biographies of famous people, inventions, films or events that make these places famous. Each podcards comes with a text containing two exercises (a vocabulary one and a comprehension one) and a transcript. The site is also provided with a list of irregular verbs that can be listened to and a list of useful links.
The audio recording is not always perfect nor is the accent of the female reader (obviously not a native speaker) but the idea is good and simple enough to be profitably exploited.

Un interessantissimo sito per gli amanti degli accenti e della storia della lingua. Un intero sito, gestito dalla BBC, è dedicato alle voci che si possono trovare in giro per il Regno Unito, non solo accenti inglesi ma anche lingue minoritarie, come il gallese o il gaelico scozzese, o di immigrazione, come il punjabi o il turco.
C’è la possibilità di ascoltare spezzoni di conversazioni partendo da una mappa, di imparare di più su cosa porta una lingua a cambiare o cosa distingue un accento da un altro, oppure si può partecipare a o fruire de i risultati di una mappatura dell’uso di parole ed espressioni, oppure ancora mettere alla prova il proprio orecchio per accenti e lingue nel Laboratorio Linguistico.
Il tutto è arricchito da link ad altre sezioni gestite dalla BBC oppure esterni su argomenti correlati. Puro stile BBC!
A really interesting site for those who love accents and the history of language. A whole website, managed by the BBC, is dedicated tp the voices that can be found around the UK, not only English accents but also minority languages, such as Welsh or Scottish Gaelic, o from immigrants, such as Turkish and Punjabi.
You have the possibilities of listening to chunks of conversations starting from a UK map, to learn more about what makes accents different or a language evolve, or you can participate in or enjoy the results of a mapping of words and expressions, or yet again you can test your ear for accents or languages in the Language Lab.
The whole site is completed by links to other BBC or external web pages on related topics. Pure BBC style!

Un sito italiano con lezioni di Inglese, podcast ed contenuti vari, frutto del lavoro del CLAM – Centro Linguistico d’Ateneo Messinese. Questo sito tematico per l’apprendimento della lingua Inglese unisce le funzioni del blog a quelle del podcasting. Regolarmente vengono pubblicate delle brevi lezioni i cui contenuti spaziano dalla grammatica, al lessico, alla lettura, alle curiosità e tanto altro ancora, con chiari riferimenti ad episodi di vita reale: vacanze, cibo e salute, tecnologia, sport, vita sociale, ecc. La pubblicazione delle lezioni è alternata a supporti audio in formato podcast, ascoltabili on-line o scaricabili in formato .mp3.
La qualità dei materiali, tutti originali, è a prime vista buona; l’impossibilità però di accedere, in questo sabato pomeriggio, alle risorse audio e ad altri materiali pubblicati sul sito del CLAM, forse per sovraffollamento, non permette di valutarne la bontà.
An Italian website with English lessons, podcasts and more, provided by CLAM – the Language Centre linked to the University of Messina. This site, dedicated to learning English, unites the functions of a weblog and those of podcasting. Short lessons ranging from grammar to vocabulary to reading to trivia are published regularly, with clear references to everyday life: holidays, food and health, technology, sport, social life etc. The written lessons alternate with podcasts, accessible on-line and downloadable as mp3s.
The quality of the original materials seems good; nevertheless, on this Saturday afternoon, the impossibility of accessing either the audio or the other resources published on the CLAM server, maybe because of overcrowding, doesn’t allow me to closely evaluate them.

Un progetto ambizioso, che mira alla pubblicazione su Internet di una versione audio di tutto ciò che è nella biblioteca gratuita del progetto Gutenberg, dove si trovano scritti non coperti da diritto d’autore e il cui sito può essere visitato per trovare una versione stampata di ciascun audiolibro.
Tutti quelli che vogliono volontariamente partecipare possono scegliere il capitolo di un libro o un racconto e registrarsi mentre lo leggono. Il file audio verrà caricato su Ourmedia.org e distribuito da Librivox tramite podcast.
L’archivio è già molto nutrito e comprende dalle fiabe di Esopo ai romanzi di Jane Austen, dalla Dichiarazione dei Diritti dell’Uomo ad alcune opere di Shakespeare.
La qualità dell’audio e dei lettori non è uniforme, ma si tratta comunque di un’importante iniziativa sia per chi voglia esercitare le proprie abilità d’ascolto che per chi, per una qualsiasi ragione, abbia difficoltà di lettura.

Whoever wants to volunteer can choose the chapter of a book or a short story and record themselves while reading. The audio files will be uploaded through Ourmedia.org and distributed by Librivox as podcasts.
The archive is already rather substantial and includes from Aesop’s fables to Jane Austen’s novels, from the Declaration of the Rights of Man to some works by Shakespeare.
The audio and readers’ quality is not always perfect; however, the initiative is laudable both for those who want to exercise their listening abilities and for those who, for a reason or another, have difficulty reading.
