Off one’s chest

“To get (something) off (one’s) chest” is a metaphoric phrase that means “venting our pent-up feelings” https://www.tfd.com/chest. The metaphor is effective because it really is a physical sensation that we have; I guess it has to do with stress response hormones or something similar.  Some feelings and thoughts really feel as if they were “heavy on our hearts”, and when we finally express them it is as if we’d been relieved of this weight.

E.g. I kept on mulling over the things he’d told me and how they were probably all lies. I finally got it off my chest and asked him.
